The Empty Nest

After so much activity and so much planning and events happening for the past year, it's a little difficult to get used to the quiet in the house. My brain is used to running on overdrive, and now it's having trouble quieting down and relaxing. It will all take time, just like it will take time for them to adjust to their new environment, too. The difference is that for them, things are just starting; but for Mom and Dad, things are ending.

The first thing I did when we got home from dropping him off was to clean his room from top to bottom. That room had never been so clean in its life as it was when I was through with it. Then I just kept going until the entire house was spotless. The physical labor helped me to work through the adjustment, I suppose.

The other thing I did was to decide on a goal I'd like to accomplish, and then I started working on it. For me that goal was to go back to school, so I'm currently working on a Master's degree. You could decide to take up a new hobby, instead, or maybe follow through on your life's dream of world traveling. The point is to choose something new to focus on so you don't inadvertantly get wrapped in your child's life instead of your own. They are free now, so you have to let them fly!

It's definitely a life-altering moment to say goodbye to your child and watch them walk off into the proverbial sunset. But at least now hubby and I can run around the house naked.

I've just got to remember to close the blinds next time.
